When You Should Prune Your Trees

We never recommend that you attempt to prune your tree on your own. Every cut can alter the growth of the tree in significant ways. It takes an experienced hand to know where to prune and when. Common reasons for pruning include removing dead branches, removing crowded limbs, and eliminating hazards to homes or utility lines. As for when to prune, most cutting to remove weak, diseased, and dead limbs are perfectly fine throughout most of the year. But this depends on the type of tree, too. For example, maple and birch trees tend to “bleed” if you prune them early in the spring. We know how to assess the tree and identify the best time to prune and where to make our cuts.

The Four Types of Pruning

Pruning is a complicated task that only a professional should undertake. That is because there are several methods of pruning. Choosing the appropriate technique depends on numerous factors, something an experienced arborist can assess. For instance, we might pursue one of the following four pruning methods:

Cleaning

Cleaning involves removing diseased, dead, crowded, weakly attached, and low-vigor branches from the crown of the tree.

Thinning

Trees require light to survive. However, when there are too many branches, not enough light filters in through the branches. Thinning involves selectively removing branches.

Raising

During this procedure, we remove lower branches from the tree. This allows for clearance for any number of things, including buildings, vehicles, and pedestrians.

Reduction

We can also reduce the overall size of a tree through reduction. We often do this to allow for access to utility lines if the tree has grown too large.

We Have the Experience We Need to Do Outstanding Work

Our experience has taught us to prune trees correctly. A lot can go wrong if you entrust your trees to unprofessional tree trimmers. We know how to prune. Most importantly, we understand that removing too many branches can lead to a host of problems. We will take away just enough to facilitate a healthier tree, but not so much that it reduces the lifespan of the tree.

Safe. Honest. Dependable.
